A novel by the winner of the 1955 Nobel Prize for Literature, and a landmark in Icelandic fiction, being the first novel published in Iceland to sell its entire initial print run on the day of publication. The story is set amidst the British occupation of Iceland during World War II, and depicts urban life in Iceland. It was adapted to film in 1984 by Borsteinn Jonsson, and also influenced the world of poetry indirectly -- the school of writers known as The Atom Poets take their name from a (pejorative) term Laxness uses for one of his characters (atomskald). Despite its strong social and cultural influence and positive critical reception, the novel was not published in the United States until 1982.
